Women’s day

Public holidays has it’s advantages- and disadvantages. It was Women’s Day in SA yesterday, and that is why I am off from (paid) work today.
But should there be a holiday like Woman’s Day – at all?

Yes, I believe that women (most of us, most of the time) are amazing people who should be celebrated. I also believe men (most of them, most of the time) are amazing people who should be celebrated.

Is there any reason to have a special day to celebrate one half of the population, but not special day for the other half? How about celebrating -appreciating, being thankful to, praising the achievements of, commemorating everyone – man, woman, or child, for what they are and do?

Are woman so essentially superior/ inferior to men that we need a day of honor that they do not?

One response to “Women’s day

  1. Retha, I think that women’s day in SA, like youth day, has specific political undertones, harking back to the liberation movements’ struggle days. Although it’s portrayed as a special day for women, it is basically just a remembrance day of (black) women’s struggle against apartheid. It would be the same, should we have a “woman’s day” to commemorate the suffering of Boer women in the British concentration camps.
